TogglePlay More. Ride Better.
Every so often we hear from parents who say, “My child isn’t interested in their balance bike” or “They’ll ride for a minute, then give up.”
More often than not, the issue isn’t ability—it’s boredom.
The secret? Turn riding into play.
When you introduce simple, fun games, your child naturally builds confidence, coordination, and balance—without even realising they’re learning. Whether your child is just starting out or already gliding with confidence, these ideas will help keep them engaged and excited to ride.
Keep sessions short, positive, and pressure-free. A little encouragement goes a long way.
🎯 Easy Games to Try on Your Kidvelo
👣 Ride Over My Foot
Perfect for beginners. Gently place your foot in their path and encourage them to ride over it. Move it around to keep things playful—and don’t forget the dramatic “ouch!” when they get you. Expect a few cheeky attempts at running over feet later!
🚴 Follow the Leader
Great for siblings or playdates. One rider leads while the others follow—speeding up, slowing down, weaving, or turning. Switch leaders often to keep it fresh.
As skills improve, add challenges like:
- Riding in figure 8s
- Gliding with feet up
- Rolling off small curbs
🎨 Chalk Line Challenge
Draw two lines on the ground and challenge your child to glide from one to the other with their feet up. Start close together, then gradually increase the distance as their confidence grows.
🚦 Red Light, Green Light
Stand a short distance away and call out:
- “Green Light” → Ride forward
- “Red Light” → Stop immediately
It’s fun, interactive, and teaches controlled stopping—an essential riding skill.
✈️ Blast Off! 3…2…1…
Build speed, then shout “Blast off!” and encourage your child to lift their feet and glide like an aeroplane. This is one of the best ways to develop natural balance.
⚖️ Balance Challenge (Off the Bike)
Balance skills don’t stop when the ride ends. Play games like Simon Says:
- Stand on one leg
- Arms out wide
- Feet together
It all helps improve coordination.
🎈 Bubble Wrap Ride
Lay out some bubble wrap and let them roll over it. The sound and feel make it irresistible—especially for younger riders.
🏁 Gliding Competition
Mark a start line, build momentum, then see how far your child can glide with their feet off the ground. Track progress over time—it’s a great confidence booster.
🌿 Scavenger Hunt Ride
Turn a ride into an adventure. Ask your child to find:
- A pinecone
- A Y-shaped stick
- Different leaves or rocks
Perfect for parks and outdoor exploring.
🚲 Make It a Family Adventure
The best way to inspire your child is simple—ride with them.
Join in, play the games, and turn it into a shared adventure. Pack some snacks, head to your local park, and enjoy the ride together.
Balance bikes aren’t just about learning to ride—they’re about building confidence, independence, and a lifelong love of cycling.
Kidvelo tip: The more fun they’re having, the faster they learn.

At our Australian company, we are dedicated to making cycling a fun and enjoyable experience for children. We specialize in designing and manufacturing lightweight bikes specifically for kids. Our range includes a unique next-generation design of balance bike that can easily convert to a first pedal bike when the child is ready, thanks to the included easy-ride pedal kit. We strongly believe that the lighter the bike, the easier it is for children to learn to ride and enjoy the experience as they progress. Many children’s bikes on the market are nearly as heavy as the child themselves! That’s why we took on the challenge of redesigning kids’ bikes, creating a lightweight yet strong aluminum frame and carefully selecting components that offer high performance without compromising on weight.
